Course Description:

This course builds competency in surface sampling practices aligned with USP <797> standards. It provides comprehensive training on the techniques, documentation, and interpretation required to perform surface sampling effectively. Learners will gain knowledge of sampling procedures, media handling, incubation protocols, and result evaluation, with a strong focus on meeting regulatory and institutional competency requirements. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of surface sampling in maintaining aseptic conditions and preventing contamination of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs).
  • Apply USP <797> requirements and recommendations on surface sampling, including media types, incubation conditions, action levels, and documentation.
  • Determine appropriate initial and ongoing surface sampling frequencies based on CSP categories (Category 1, 2, and 3).
  • Identify critical sampling sites including ISO Class 5 PECs, staging areas, frequently touched surfaces, and pass-through chambers.
  • Apply step-by-step guidance on proper sampling technique, media handling, incubation, and result recording.
  • Understand competency requirements for individuals performing surface sampling, including training intervals and documentation.
  • Evaluate and document surface sampling competency as part of aseptic manipulation assessments.
